“….Now I have a young King who really loves me ecstatically; you cannot conceive what that means. I remember a dream which I had in my youth: I dreamed that Shakespeare was living, and that I saw him and spoke to him, actually in person. Somewhat similar must be the feelings of this charming young man in having me….. ”
This is what Richard Wagner wrote in a letter to Eliza Wille, a German novelist, about King Ludwig II who was a great admirer of the composer. Thus, in the summer of 1864 Wagner spent his time at Lake Starnberg. Here he composed his jubilant ‘Huldigungsmarsch’, as an expression of homage an gratitude to his royal benefactor. This ‘Huldigungsmarsch’ bears Wagner’s typical signature. In his own words something “from ‘Lohengrin’ and ‘Tannhäuser’ and perhaps something new”.
